An Adventure into Ego

"Life will give you whatever experience is most helpful for the evolution of your consciousness. How do you know this is the experience you need, because this is the experience you are having this moment."

Eckhart Tolle

I find it magnificent how the Universe always supports us in discovering, integrating and consecrating whatever it is that we are working on within ourselves. I have been deeply engaged in ego observation over the last few weeks by being consciously aware of how the ego shows up, what thoughts; beliefs and behaviours it triggers mentally, emotionally and physically. I have been observing this not only in myself but also in others .... immersed into being the Watcher. I have also been aware of how the ego attempts to co-opt the experience of being the Watcher behind the thinker by attaching further thoughts, labels and judgements. Oftentimes, I have been deeply amused by my observations.

In his book A New Earth, Eckhart Tolle suggests a variety of practises in surrendering to what is and resisting the egoic urge to react in a given situation and, as usual, when doing any sort of inner work Life is completely supportive in offering you an experience within which to practise what you have learned theoretically thereby offering the opportunity of integration mentally, emotionally, physically and, ultimately, spiritually.

An event occurred for me where I attempted to pacify a situation that arose and was turned upon myself with anger and deep judgement. Upon extensive self-reflection I recognised several aspects of ego at play, within myself as well as the others included in this event. I observed the anger against me, did not take it personally, and recognised how it is that we project our inner discomfort onto others through our judgements and labels.

For example, one of the things I was accused of was being passive-aggressive as I chose to walk away from the situation, recognising that my input was not needed and I need not involve myself. In retrospect this event has taught me that I am able to witness, observe and accept another’s ego at play whilst acknowledging that this is not who they truly are but that they are simply having a mind-identified reaction. Reflecting on the statement that I was being passive-aggressive I recognise too how this was simply a projection of the other onto me. When we make judgement on another we are quite simply expressing our own feelings of inadequacy and when we become truly aware of this fact we are then able to look at these thoughts and feelings we have towards another and own them as our experience of ourselves. When we can take responsibilty in this way we then begin the process of setting ourselves free from mind-identification or the ego.

In the past few days I have considered the need to speak up, speak out and speak my truth with the person involved, yet I realise that this too is my ego at work. Only the ego needs to defend itself, because it is only ever the ego that is threatened. The truth of who I am … Awareness, Consciousness, Infinite Intelligence … can never be threatened, does not need defending and can never, in truth, be hurt or harmed in anyway.

So with that thought, I offer you the opportunity to become Aware of how the ego shows up in your life, your own and those around you. I also challenge you to surrender to the moment and even when you feel the need to react or respond, simply allow. Recognise mind-identification for what it is. Rise above the moment, not from an egoic stand point, but from the Consciousness that is you.
